Calcitonin - a drug used for the treatment of the parathyroid glands.

The pharmacological action of calcitonin

Calcitonin - hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, plays a major role in regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism in the body decreases the yield of calcium from the bones, that is effective in conditions associated with dramatically increased speed of the suction element and bone formation, such as, for example, in nipple breast cancer, some forms of osteoporosis, malignant osteolysis.

Calcitonin reduces the activity of osteoclasts (the cells that contribute to the resorption of cartilage), and increases the activity of osteoblasts (cells responsible for bone formation), lowers increased amount of calcium in the blood. Also, the drug enhances the excretion of sodium, calcium, phosphorus excretion, reducing their reabsorption in the renal tubules. In the serum calcium content does not drop below normal.

The hormone calcitonin decreases the release of gastric juice, pancreatic cancer enzymes without affecting the mobility of the gastrointestinal tract.

It was also proved that calcitonin has analgesic effect.

Product form

Calcitonin is released in the form of a solution for injections, infusions, intranasal administration.

Indications Calcitonin

Calcitonin is prescribed for the treatment of systemic diseases that are characterized by enhanced reconstruction of the skeleton: osteogenesis imperfecta, Paget's disease, spontaneous resorption of bone, aseptic necrosis of the femoral heads, parathyroid osteoporosis, menopause, steroid, fibrous dysplasia, morbidity of bone after trauma (slow fracture healing, radiation, traumatic osteomyelitis, pathological bone remodeling in athletes), periodontal disease.

To determine the need for prescribing conduct tests to determine the compliance rate of calcitonin.

For men, the rate of calcitonin 0-20pg / ml for women - 28pg / ml.

Mode of application

Calcitonin - a drug used for the treatment of the parathyroid glands
Calcitonin inject intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously and intranasally.

In severe emergencies drug is administered intravenously: 5-10ME per kilogram of body weight per day. Dilute Calcitonin in 500ml sodium chloride, after introducing drip 2-4 doses for 6h.

In chronic conditions calcitonin administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously: 5-10ME per kilogram body weight / day for one or two steps.

For intranasal use, the use of calcitonin aerosol (as a preparation even higher digestibility).

The dosage for nasal irrigation - 100-400ME day. It is administered in a few doses.

Side effects

Calcitonin may cause hypersensitivity reactions - vomiting, flushing blood nausea. If the patient manifested hypersensitivity, drug overturned.

Contraindications to the use of calcitonin

The introduction of the hormone calcitonin contraindicated under reduced content of calcium in the blood during pregnancy, lactation.

The introduction of the drug into the nose can not be performed in patients with chronic rhinitis.
