Galega - plants used in folk medicine
 Galega - a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family.

Description galega drug

Plant height of from 40 cm to 2 m 5 has a taproot. Stems are erect, multiple, branching. Leaves petiolate, imparipinnate, with stipules, with 5-10 pairs of linear-lanceolate leaves, and on top - peaked.

Flowers are often light blue, numerous, with long stalks, gathered in axillary dense brush. Corolla pale blue or pale purple papilionaceous. Calyx campanulate. The plant provides polyspermous fruits, standing up beans in length from 2 to 4 cm. The seeds are smooth, kidney-shaped, greenish-yellow color.

Plants grow in the Ukraine (Crimea, Dnieper area, the Carpathians), in the Caucasus, Moldova and in the European part of Russia (Black Sea, Lower Volga areas).

It grows on the banks of the river valleys and along the roads, among bushes, in the steppes and mountain areas, forest edges, in beech, in the subtropical rain forests.

For therapeutic purposes, is used grass seeds and plants (flowers, leaves, stalks).

The chemical composition of the drug galega

The plant contains alkaloids, saponins and other nitrogen-containing compounds: 4-gidroksigalegin, galegin.

The roots galega contains triterpenoids.

The grass plants were found alkaloids, carbohydrates, peganine, vazitsinon and other nitrogen-containing compounds: tannins, kaempferol, pipecolic acid, ascorbic acid, rutin, flavonoids, quercetin, carotene, bitter substances, galegin, tannins, phenol carboxylic acids and derivatives of the hydrolyzate (p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic, sinapic).

In plants seeds contain sucrose, steroids, stachyose, alkaloids, saponins and other nitrogen-containing compounds, fatty oil, as well as acids: stearic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic.

The use of drug galega

 Grass galega drug
 Action galegina studied in scientific medicine. When administered in a vein it causes an increase in blood pressure. When applied topically, it constricts the pupils. Galegin constricts blood vessels, inhibits intestinal motility and increases the secretion of breast milk.

Galegin used in the treatment of diabetes as an adjunct to insulin treatment, which allows to reduce its dosage. Extracts from the seeds galega used for the same purpose.

Galegin contained in the grass, has a hypoglycemic effect, and peganine able to tone the smooth muscles.

Preparations galega have diuretic and diaphoretic action. In pregnant women increases the secretion of milk.

In folk medicine, decoctions and infusions of galega drug used in diabetes, as well as an anthelmintic.

Galega officinalis - honey plant

Galega has long been recognized as the best honey plant. This plant is able to give as much nectar as and sainfoin. The plant blooms with white acacia - in mid-May. Flowering continues throughout the month. On one hectare of bees collect nectar about 200 kg. Bees pollinate it is much easier to plant, as it lacks triplinga that allows bees when collecting nectar not nip proboscis.

After flowering is necessary to mow the grass, then the plant will bloom in August and will bloom until mid-September.

Contraindications galega drug

It should be used with caution drugs galega. Their prolonged use causes an increase in blood pressure and may interfere with the function of the intestine.

Pregnant women doctors do not recommend to use drugs galega. Hypotension and hypertension are also contraindicated for use.
