Duphalac - pharmacological preparation on the basis of lactulose with a laxative effect.
Structure and Composition
Duphalac is available in the form of syrup. 100ml medicament comprises 66 g of lactulose and 7 purified water to a volume of 100 ml.
According to the instructions Dufalac is a transparent, viscous liquid of light yellow color.
This drug is made in plastic bottles of 200, 500 or 1000 ml (standard - measuring cup). There is also a release form in disposable bags from foil and polyethylene of 15 ml (10 bags per box).
Pharmacological action Duphalac
This drug has a laxative effect. Dufalac has a hyperosmotic effect, and thus stimulates peristalsis. It also improves the absorption of calcium and phosphate, and favors the removal of ammonium ions. Intestinal microflora of the colon lactulose cleaves to low molecular weight organic acids, helps to increase the volume of the intestinal contents. Thus Dufalac stimulates intestinal motility and affect stool consistency. This leads to the restoration of the physiological rhythm of emptying the colon and eliminate constipation.
Application Duphalac in hepatic encephalopathy or precoma (coma) can reduce the content of toxic substances in the intestines of nitrogen metabolism, thereby reducing the negative effect of these substances on the brain.
According to the instructions Duphalac is a prebiotic, ie enhances the growth of beneficial bacteria (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli), and inhibits the growth of pathogens (Clostridium, Salmonella) and reduces the period of bacteria. Thus, this drug allows a favorable balance of intestinal microbiota.
According to the instructions Duphalac drug has a low absorption after ingestion it comes to colon unchanged and there is split microflora. The dosage of 40-75 ml per day the drug is completely metabolized. At higher doses the drug is partially excreted unchanged.
Duphalac is used for constipation functional origin, as well as to soften the stool hemorrhoids, anal fissures, after surgery on the intestine and the anal canal. This drug is indicated for hepatic encephalopathy or coma (precoma).
According to the instructions Duphalac used in treatment of dysbiosis, enteritis (in the stage of bacteria) and putrid dyspepsia syndrome in children (as a result of acute food poisoning).
Duphalac is also used for the preparation of the colon for diagnostic studies (sigmoidoscopy, barium enema, colonoscopy).
- Acute intestinal obstruction;
- hypersensitivity to the drug ingredients.
According to the instructions Duphalac should be used with caution in patients with lactose intolerance, intestinal bleeding of unknown etiology. Also, the drug should be used with caution in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, diabetes mellitus.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
According to the instructions Dufalac has no effect on the fetus and during pregnancy, it is approved for use during pregnancy. The drug does not penetrate into the breast milk and can be used during breastfeeding.
Dosing and Administration Duphalac
This drug is intended for oral administration. Syrup can be taken undiluted or diluted in water. If Dufalac administered once a day, it is necessary to drink at the same time (for example, in the morning during breakfast).
In the treatment of constipation and softening stool drug is given to adults in the initial dosage of 15-45 ml daily, and then move on to a maintenance dose of 15-30 ml. The initial dose is selected individually, the drug may be taken once or being divided into 2 parts. The maintenance dose is selected depending on the reaction to the reception of the drug. In the opinion of the therapeutic effect of Duphalac may appear 2-3 days after starting the drug. During treatment Dufalac necessary to take sufficient amount of liquid (1, 5-2 liters per day).
Children dosage of the drug is selected depending on the age:
- Children aged 7-14 - 10-15 ml per day;
- children 1-6 years 5-10 ml per day;
- children up to a year - to 5 ml per day.
Duphalac for newborns is also used in the treatment of constipation and dysbiosis. It is recommended to start taking 1 ml, gradually bringing the amount of the drug to 4-5 ml (this will help avoid increased gas).
In the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy dose of Duphalac selected individually, usually starting dose is 30-45 ml.
For the preparation of the colon for research use 100-150 ml of the product. Generally, the dosage depends on the kind of study, the patient's condition and the physician individually selected. In the opinion of Duphalac for these purposes are best used in conjunction with other methods of cleaning the bowel (eg, cleansing enemas).
In the early days of Duphalac may cause increased gas (flatulence). It usually disappears after a few days. When high doses of the drug occurs diarrhea. There may also be nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In the opinion of Duphalac reports of its side effects are not sufficient for an accurate assessment of the incidence.
If the drug is used in high doses (e.g., in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy) can develop in a patient electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhea.
At high doses the drug can diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Cancel the drug or reducing the dose eliminates these manifestations. In the case of electrolyte imbalance correction is required the introduction of electrolyte solutions.
Interaction with other drugs
Clinical studies on the interaction of Duphalac with other pharmacological agents have been conducted.
Special instructions for use Duphalac
In the absence of the effect of the drug for a few days, consult your doctor.
Note that Dufalac may contain a minor amount of sugars (e.g., lactose, galactose, fructose). When receiving the dosage for the treatment of constipation is not a problem for patients with diabetes. But the treatment of hepatic coma (encephalopathy) sugar content should be considered for these patients.
Patients unable to tolerate galactose, fructose should not use this drug. Duphalac for newborns can be used only under medical supervision.
